Pattern, Point, and Hit — The Shotgun Is a Different Animal
The shotgun is unlike any other firearm in your safe. It doesn’t aim the same way, it doesn’t operate the same way, and it doesn’t forgive the same mistakes. The Basic Shotgun course teaches you to use it correctly — safely, accurately, and with confidence.
Whether you’re interested in hunting, home defense, or the genuine fun of breaking clay targets, this course builds the foundation you need to shoot a shotgun well.
What You’ll Cover:
- Shotgun operating systems — break action, pump action, and semi-automatic
- Gauge selection and ammunition — shot size, choke tubes, and what they mean for your purpose
- Shotgun-specific safety protocols and safe handling
- Point and shoot technique — why shotguns are aimed differently than rifles and handguns
- Lead, swing through, and sustained lead — how to hit moving targets
- Pattern and point of impact — understanding where your shot goes and why
- Clay target shooting — you will shoot clays as part of this course and learn why they are the best training tool for shotgun marksmanship
- Home defense considerations — a brief introduction to ammunition selection and platform choice for residential use
The Standard:
You will be required to demonstrate consistent hits on both stationary and moving targets before completing the course. The moving target standard is achievable — and considerably more fun than paper.
First Steps Shotgun recommended but not required for students with prior experience.
Ammunition is not included in the course fee. Students are welcome to use their own firearm and ammunition. We have course shotguns available for use — inquire when you sign up.
