Who He Is
Mike Ange has spent his entire adult life in environments where safety, situational awareness, and the ability to respond to a threat were not academic concepts — they were job requirements. As a Military Police Officer, Sheriff’s Deputy, Narcotics Officer, Task Force Agent, maritime captain, public safety diver, corporate executive, and educator, his work has taken him to 37 countries across virtually every urban environment imaginable and most undeveloped settings outside of jungles. He holds a Ph.D. in adult educational psychology with a field of research focused on survival in critical incidents and how curriculum/training can improve survival odds. He is not a theorist. He is a practitioner who has developed a studied understanding of how people learn under pressure — and he builds every course around that understanding.
What He’s Done
Mike began his law enforcement career as a Military Police Officer in the National Guard before leaving HS, he went on to serve over 12 years of combined reserve and active service. He was trained as a criminal investigator, served as the team leader of an MP React/SR Team specializing in to immediate threat response and protection of both resources and VIPs. He served deployments to the Middle East and North Africa, including all 3 phases of the First Gulf War and Operation Bright Star.
Transitioning to civilian law enforcement while still serving as a reservist, he worked as a Public Safety Officer — certified as a firefighter, advanced EMT, and police officer, completing additional schools from the NC Justice Academy including law enforcement officer certification, investigation courses and Crime Prevention. He later moved to a high-crime policing area as a Deputy Sheriff and ultimately to narcotics, serving both his local agency and a multi-jurisdictional task force. He was forced to leave law enforcement due to injuries sustained during a wartime mobilization to the Middle East.
In his post law enforcement and military career he moved full time into recreational diving instruction and then public safety, technical and scientific diving — training law enforcement officers, underwater crime scene technicians, public safety divers, scientific divers, and military units including national public safety assets in Europe and PS assets including force protection police in Asia as Public Safety Diving Instructors. He was formally contracted as a Subject Matter Expert to the U.S. Army’s 7th Special Forces Group Maritime Operations Detachment, providing specialized instruction to combat divers from the 7th and 3rd Special Forces Groups at Fort Bragg. He is a founding member of the world’s largest public safety diver training agency and the author of 10 nonfiction books published in 17 languages. His firearms credentials include qualification as an Expert Military Marksman with rifles, pistols, grenade launchers and other weapons and qualified as an expert on multiple LEO handgun courses. Mike has also trained as a law enforcement rifle marksman and completed VIP protection, defensive driving, and physical security courses. He holds current NRA certification as a multi-discipline firearms instructor covering pistol, rifle, shotgun, and defensive courses for both home and street applications.
As part of his ongoing professional development, Mike read law at a top 20 U.S. law school and studied graduate law in the United Kingdom. He is not a lawyer — but his understanding of the civil and criminal legal framework surrounding use of force, self-defense, and post-incident liability informs every defensive course he teaches. He has published over 100 post-incident analyses and reviews, many involving fatalities, giving him a perspective on what leads to survival — or failure to survive — and how those attributes apply across many venues. This is experience and knowledge that no classroom alone can provide.
Why It Matters to You
Most firearms instructors teach you to shoot and he does that in basic courses, but in his advanced courses, Mike also teaches you the skills and attributes you can use to survive. When the ‘threat’ is not dinner or a paper silhouette target, there is a very meaningful difference between the two.
The most important skill in any defensive situation is not marksmanship. It is situational awareness and staying in the game — recognizing a threat before it materializes, avoiding confrontation wherever possible, and knowing with clarity when you must stand your ground. He is not here to impress you with credentials. He is here because preventing victimization matters to him — and because the knowledge he has earned over a lifetime is too important not to share.
