Basic Rifle

The Basic Rifle course is where safe firearm handling meets real shooting skill. You already know how to handle a rifle safely (if not start with a first steps course). This course teaches you to use it well — with consistent accuracy, proper technique, and a passing standard that means something.

Our Basic Rifle course has met the Florida Hunter Safety hands-on firearms training portion requirement for hunting licenses for teens in the past. This is up to the FWC instructor to evaluate. Whether you’re preparing for Lafayette County deer and boar season, introducing a teen to hunting, or simply want to shoot a rifle accurately and confidently, this is the course that gets you there.

  • Rifle operating systems — bolt action, semi-automatic, lever action
  • Sights and sighting systems — open sights, peep sights, and optics
  • Sight alignment, sight picture, and aim points at distances up to 50 feet
  • Trigger control and follow through — the two skills that separate consistent shooters from occasional ones
  • Ammunition selection — calibers, bullet types, and what’s appropriate for your purpose
  • Zeroing your rifle — understanding point of aim vs. point of impact
  • Range safety and shooting positions — standing, sitting supported, and prone supported

You will be required to demonstrate consistent hits on target before completing the course. That standard is achievable — and we’ll work with you until you meet it.

Open to ages 12 and up. First Steps Rifle recommended but not required for students with prior experience.

Ammunition is not included in the course fee. We have .22 LR rifles available for use at no extra charge. Students are welcome to use their own firearm and ammunition.
